Balfour Beatty buys US energy storage business Subsurface Group

For Parson Brinckerhoff’s US energy storage services business, Balfour Beatty has purchased the American consulting and engineering firm Subsurface Group.

Subterranean injection, underground storage, speciality wells, petroleum and natural resources, and environmental science are just some of the specialties that Subsurface specialises in. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Subsurface also maintains operations in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and South Bend, Indiana. The 37-person business is anticipated to earn around US$50m (£31m) of sales in 2012.

CEO Ian Tyler of Balfour Beatty stated: “Subsurface Group’s recognised expertise in underground injection and specialty wells and Parsons Brinckerhoff’s skills and services in underground storage create synergies for us and the oil, gas, energy and industrial clients that both companies serve. Tyler”

“We are very pleased to have Subsurface as part of Parsons Brinckerhoff and see this acquisition as a significant step in enhancing our wider capabilities in power and energy – a strategic growth area for Balfour Beatty.”
